We are committed to providing high quality reading resources for our children. We have a very well-resourced library which is continually updated through direct book purchasing and our Service Level Agreement with Devon School’s Library Service. This provides the resources for our children to access our Accelerated Reader learning programme. Each classroom has an inviting, rich reading area with our main aim being to foster a love of reading and to develop each pupils’ ability, understanding and enjoyment as a reader.
Phonics is taught daily using the “Read, Write, Inc.” programme from Foundation Stage to the end of Year 2. Where necessary, 1 to 1 tutoring based on “Read, Write Inc.” is delivered to individual pupils to support their reading development. From Foundation Stage through Key Stage 1, each child is given a reading diary which parents, staff and children can use to record progress of their reading. Parents are encouraged to listen to their child read and share books regularly and to record this in their child’s reading diary. Please see below for more information on Read, Write Inc.
The majority of pupils in Key Stage 2 can choose reading books from the library as determined by their progress within the Accelerated Reader scheme. Whole class reading comprehension lessons are based on the VIPERS system developed by The Literacy Shed. Children are taught the key skills of retrieving information, inference, prediction, summarising and explaining using a wide range of texts including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. An intervention programme based on “Fresh Start” from Read, Write, Inc. is delivered to small groups of pupils to support decoding and comprehension in Key Stage 2. Parents can monitor and support their child’s reading using the Home Connect portal linked to Accelerated Reader.
We value the importance that you as parents have in the development of your child’s enjoyment of reading and we hope that you will play an active part in sharing books with your child as they journey throughout school.
What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book within their range and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice and teaching. Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them. The range helps your child to choose books at an appropriate readability level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that your child can pass the quiz and experience success. If your child does not pass a quiz, the teacher may help your child:
In most cases, children really enjoy taking the quizzes. Since they’re reading books within their reading and interest levels, they are likely to be successful. This is satisfying for most children. Best of all, they learn and grow at their own pace.

Accelerated Reader can be accessed from your home computer. From here you are able to view books they are reading or have read and quiz results. Quizzes can only be carried out in school. At the start of each new school year you will receive a letter with your child’s log in details and password, which you will need to access information about their reading or set up email alerts.
You can help your child to choose books at the appropriate readability level using an online tool called AR BookFinder. This enables children to widen the range of available books to include local libraries and books from home. Please see the PDF below for more information or visit the AR Bookfinder directly: https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/default.aspx.
